J & A Orchard is located on a scenic mountaintop in the foothills of western North Carolina. Owners Jim and Alice Land acquired the property (formerly Blair Orchard), which is adjacent to their home, in 1989. Jim Land grows and cares for the more than 1500 apple trees, 100 peach and nectarine trees and 100 Asian pear trees covering the picturesque 10 acres of gorgeous countryside. The Lands initially picked, packed and sold their fruit to distributors, but soon realized that offering customers the opportunity to “pick their own” fruit was a better fit for them and for their patrons. Opening Day is Thursday, August 12, 2010. Hours: Monday-Saturday 9AM-6PM Sunday 1PM-5:30PM Address: 2052 Old NC 90 Taylorsville, NC 28681 J & A Orchard provides buckets (lined with a convenient tie-top bag) and long-handled apple pickers (no ladders necessary). Apples are sold by the peck, half-peck, bushel and half-bushel. 2010 price for apples is $16 per bushel. (A bushel is about 42 pounds of apples. ) Men’s and women’s restrooms are available and are handicap-accessible. J& A Orchard cannot accept checks, debit cards or credit cards. The closest ATM is at the intersection of Hwy. 127 and Hwy. 64-90, approximately 3 miles from the orchard. Before the orchard opens each year, Jim and Alice sell several varieties of early apples as well as peaches, pears, nectarines and numerous vegetables at Kilby’s Cattle Sale in Wilkesboro, NC and also at the Alexander Farmers Market. Repeat customers will tell you to get there early...Jim and Alice’s quality home-grown produce is some of the best they’ve ever tasted! Kilby’s Cattle Sale (phone 336-838-3442) is located off Hwy. 115 at 106 Armory Road, North Wilkesboro NC 28659. Jim and Alice are usually there at sunrise on Monday mornings before the orchard opens for the season, starting in July. The Alexander Farmers Market (phone 828-632-4451) is located on Hwy. 16, one mile north of Hwy 64-90, in the old hospital parking lot. Jim and Alice are there at 2PM on most Thursday afternoons before the orchard opens for the season, beginning July 2010.
